Hobby Kat
Building page 1, 2, 3 Forum canoebuilding log

This site is about building a Hobby Kat, a beach catamaran, plans of which were first published in “Mechanix Illustrated” in 1973. Here the cover of the magazine:

The plans are now available in several places over internet for free; however there is no information about any builders or builds. I considered also some other models, also plans that you have to buy, but I found no advantages on those. As the Hobby Kat is very similar to Hobie Cat, the design is also proven. Plans can be printed out at http://www.svensons.com/boat/?p=SailBoats/Hobby_Kat

I try to describe the building process here, also to give some advice of what could be changed and improved, helping some other potential builders to make a final decision whether to choose Hobby or not… All comments/notes/tips about the design or building process also welcome.

First of all – as the most used beach catamaran is Hobie Cat 16, I also extended it to 16, proportionally extending bow, aft and between the beams sections. Beam I kept the same. The plans are not very detailed, so there are many things you have free hands on…
